CHAPTER SEVEN

ON THAT wonderful night when Manolis had taken her home after their lengthy session in Theatre, Tanya hadn’t dreamed that it would be more than two weeks before the long-awaited day out on Manolis’s boat. As she hurriedly packed a small bag with towel and spare bikini—she was already wearing her favourite white one under her jeans—her thoughts drifted back to that exquisite night they’d spent together.

It had certainly been a turning point in their relationship. She remembered how he’d carried her up the narrow stairs to her bedroom. They’d laughed at the romantic gesture that had always made them giggle when they’d been living together in his tiny apartment in Sydney.

The people who owned the apartment had been Greek and had built a small mezzanine floor with a moussandra—a raised platform—for the bed. Manolis had so often insisted on carrying her up the small staircase when it had been obvious to both of them that they were going to fall on to the bed and make love.

He’d carried her upstairs so gently when he’d come to terms with the fact that she was expecting their baby. For a few days after she’d first told him she could tell he was shocked but it hadn’t taken long before he’d said he was looking forward to being a father. He’d insisted on cooking supper for them that evening, she remembered, making her sit with her feet up on the sofa.

Afterwards he’d scooped her up in his arms and carried her carefully up the stairs.

“Our first child,” he’d said as he’d laid her gently on the bed, treating her as if she were made of Dresden china. “I shall carry you upstairs from now on.”

She’d laughed, telling him when she got as big as a house she wouldn’t hold him to it. But that hadn’t happen anyway because she hadn’t got very far on the motherhood road…

She zipped up her bag and told herself she wasn’t going to continue that train of thought. Their present relationship was sailing along beautifully now. She wouldn’t allow herself to dwell on the past or the future. Only the present was what she cared about when she was with Manolis. They’d both established that fact when they’d made love a couple of weeks ago. It was as if they’d never had that six-year split. Their bodies were so tuned to each other’s that…

She drew in her breath and shivered with remembered sensual passion. It had been the most wonderful night of her life—until the next night and the next night…

“Are you up there, Tanya?” came the recognisable voice of Chrysanthe.

Tanya’s door was always open and Chrysanthe often wandered in when she knew that Tanya was home.

“Yes, come on up, agapi mou. I’m nearly ready.”

“Daddy says we’ve got to go soon. He was using his cross voice so I think he means now.”

The little girl arrived panting at the top of the stairs that led straight into Tanya’s bedroom. She held out her arms for a hug.
