CHAPTER SEVEN
ON THAT wonderful night when Manolis had taken her home after their lengthy session in Theatre, Tanya hadnât dreamed that it would be more than two weeks before the long-awaited day out on Manolisâs boat. As she hurriedly packed a small bag with towel and spare bikiniâshe was already wearing her favourite white one under her jeansâher thoughts drifted back to that exquisite night theyâd spent together.
It had certainly been a turning point in their relationship. She remembered how heâd carried her up the narrow stairs to her bedroom. Theyâd laughed at the romantic gesture that had always made them giggle when theyâd been living together in his tiny apartment in Sydney.
The people who owned the apartment had been Greek and had built a small mezzanine floor with a moussandraâa raised platformâfor the bed. Manolis had so often insisted on carrying her up the small staircase when it had been obvious to both of them that they were going to fall on to the bed and make love.
Heâd carried her upstairs so gently when heâd come to terms with the fact that she was expecting their baby. For a few days after sheâd first told him she could tell he was shocked but it hadnât taken long before heâd said he was looking forward to being a father. Heâd insisted on cooking supper for them that evening, she remembered, making her sit with her feet up on the sofa.
Afterwards heâd scooped her up in his arms and carried her carefully up the stairs.
âOur first child,â heâd said as heâd laid her gently on the bed, treating her as if she were made of Dresden china. âI shall carry you upstairs from now on.â
Sheâd laughed, telling him when she got as big as a house she wouldnât hold him to it. But that hadnât happen anyway because she hadnât got very far on the motherhood roadâ¦
She zipped up her bag and told herself she wasnât going to continue that train of thought. Their present relationship was sailing along beautifully now. She wouldnât allow herself to dwell on the past or the future. Only the present was what she cared about when she was with Manolis. Theyâd both established that fact when theyâd made love a couple of weeks ago. It was as if theyâd never had that six-year split. Their bodies were so tuned to each otherâs thatâ¦
She drew in her breath and shivered with remembered sensual passion. It had been the most wonderful night of her lifeâuntil the next night and the next nightâ¦
âAre you up there, Tanya?â came the recognisable voice of Chrysanthe.
Tanyaâs door was always open and Chrysanthe often wandered in when she knew that Tanya was home.
âYes, come on up, agapi mou. Iâm nearly ready.â
âDaddy says weâve got to go soon. He was using his cross voice so I think he means now.â
The little girl arrived panting at the top of the stairs that led straight into Tanyaâs bedroom. She held out her arms for a hug.
